Employee Spotlight with Morgan Balog

Whether you are looking for an expert of content and copy creation, scuba diving, heavy metal, or the father of two cats, Morgan Balog is a man of many interest. Morgan loves to read, write, and did we mention, his most recent band, Goodbye Tiger, is on iTunes and Spotify? Morgan took a few minutes from his busy day-to-day to give us a quick glimpse into what makes him Morgan.

How long have you been at Billtrust and what’s your favorite part of your job?

It’s almost been five months now. I really love the culture and getting to collaborate with as many people as I do. It’s been really rewarding to acclimate to the Billtrust “voice” and help shape it in new and exciting marketing projects.

Where are you from?

I grew up in Howell, NJ, but live a block from the beach in Long Branch, New Jersey, with my girlfriend, Patti, and our two psychotic cats, Toad and Shiva the Destroyer.

What is your favorite vacation destination and why?

I’ve been to Norway and fell in love with it. While I’ve been to many Caribbean islands, there was something really magical about going somewhere so cold and different. We drove about six hours north of Oslo when we were there to see a frozen waterfall called Vøringfossen, and I got to see snow drifts that were taller than me that stretched on for miles. I also grew up listening to a lot of Norwegian Black Metal, and getting to actually see some of the cultural icons from that music scene was really cool for me.

What is your favorite hobby?

I love playing music with my friends, as well as scuba diving/spear fishing with my father and bodyboarding all year round.

What is your favorite book and why?

My favorite book is Gravity’s Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon. It’s a real psychedelic whirlwind, full of conspiracies, history, and tons of dark humor. It has over 400 characters all intersecting across a massively complex plot and has some of the best writing in the past hundred years.

What is your “spirit animal” and why?

It would probably be an octopus, mostly because I too change colors when I get annoyed and spend the majority of my time brooding in underwater caves.

As a child, what did you want your adult profession to be?

When I was a kid, I had a weird obsession with Tommy Lee Jones (thanks Men In Black), so I thought I could become an actor like him. That obviously didn’t work out.

What is something “interesting” about you that everyone at the office might not know?

Maybe not that interesting (or surprising), but I spend a lot of my free time writing (or trying to write) fiction. I’ve written one novel and am working on a new one that I hope to eventually publish. I was actually recently accepted into a fiction writers workshop in Brooklyn that will be run by the author, Austin Ratner.

A special thank you to Morgan for sharing these insights.
